What are the SSDI eligibility requirements in Nevada?

If you're a Nevada resident unable to work due to a medical condition, you may qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). SSDI provides monthly benefits to individuals with a qualifying work history and a disabling condition. But to qualify, you’ll need to meet both medical and non-medical eligibility criteria established by the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Here’s what you need to know about SSDI eligibility in Nevada.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Basic SSDI Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for SSDI, you must meet two main types of requirements: work-related qualifications and medical criteria.

1. Work History Requirements

  • You must have worked in jobs that paid into Social Security (FICA taxes).
  • You must have earned a sufficient number of work credits:
  • Typically, 40 credits are required, 20 of which must have been earned in the last 10 years before you became disabled.
  • Younger workers may qualify with fewer credits.

2. Medical Disability Requirements

  • You must have a severe physical or mental condition that:
  • Prevents you from performing substantial gainful activity (SGA).
  • Has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months, or result in death.
  • Your condition must meet or equal an impairment listed in the SSA’s Listing of Impairments (Blue Book), or be shown to limit your ability to do past or any other work.

SSA’s Five-Step Evaluation Process

The SSA uses a five-step process to determine SSDI eligibility:

  1. Are you working?
If you're earning over the SGA limit ($1,550/month in 2025 for non-blind individuals), you’re typically ineligible.
  2. Is your condition severe?
Your condition must significantly limit your ability to perform basic work-related tasks.
  3. Does your condition meet a listed impairment?
If yes, you may be approved automatically.
  4. Can you do your previous work?
If not, they move to the next step.
  5. Can you do any other work?
If the SSA determines you cannot adjust to other work, you may be found disabled.

Additional Considerations for Nevada Residents

While SSDI eligibility requirements are federal, certain processes may be handled by Nevada's Disability Determination Services (DDS). It’s important to stay responsive to state-level requests for medical records or exams.

Common Reasons for SSDI Denial

Even if you technically qualify, your application may be denied due to:

  • Insufficient medical documentation
  • Inconsistent treatment history
  • Failure to follow prescribed medical treatment
  • Errors or omissions in the application
  • Lack of recent work credits
