How to schedule an SSDI consultative exam in Nevada?

When applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in Nevada, the Social Security Administration (SSA) may require you to attend a consultative exam (CE). This exam helps SSA obtain additional medical information if your current records are incomplete or outdated.

Although SSA arranges the consultative exam, knowing how the process works and what you can do to prepare can make a major difference in your claim’s success.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

What Is a Consultative Exam (CE)?

A consultative exam is a medical evaluation conducted by an independent healthcare provider. These providers are contracted by SSA and are not your treating doctors. The goal is to help SSA determine whether you meet the disability criteria.

You may be asked to attend a physical, psychological, or specialized exam, depending on your condition and the type of evidence needed.

Who Schedules the Consultative Exam?

In Nevada, you do not schedule the exam on your own. SSA or Disability Determination Services (DDS) will send you a letter with:

  • The name and contact information of the medical provider
  • The type of exam you are required to attend
  • The scheduled date, time, and location

Make sure to check your mail regularly after filing your SSDI claim. The consultative exam letter will usually arrive if the SSA determines more medical proof is needed.

What If You Need to Reschedule?

If you cannot attend the exam as scheduled, it’s important to contact the number on your appointment letter as soon as possible. In most cases, DDS or the provider can reschedule once — but missing the exam without notice can result in your claim being denied for “failure to cooperate.”

To improve your chances of rescheduling:

  • Call as early as possible
  • Provide a valid reason (transportation, illness, emergency)
  • Be flexible with alternate dates

How to Prepare for Your Exam

Although you don’t choose the date or doctor, you can prepare for your consultative exam in the following ways:

  • Bring photo identification
  • Arrive early to the exam location
  • Review your medical history and current symptoms
  • Make a list of medications and recent treatments
  • Be honest and clear about how your condition affects your daily life

The exam may be short, but it carries significant weight in the decision process.

What Happens After the Exam?

The doctor will send a report back to SSA with their findings. SSA will then use this report — along with other records — to make a determination on your SSDI eligibility.

You will not receive results directly from the doctor. Instead, you’ll get a formal decision from SSA, which could take several weeks after the exam.
